Prologue:

Dusty, empty shoe boxes, stacked taller and wider than her slim body, wobbled as she pressed her back against them, tucking her bony knees into her chest.

Breathe. Just Breathe. Breathe.

Wedged in the back of the dingy closet, she didn’t dare make a sound as she sucked her lower lip between her teeth. Focusing on forcing every grimy breath into her lungs, she felt tears well in her eyes.

Oh gosh, she’d made such a big mistake, and Miss Becky was right. She was a bad girl.

She’d reached for the dirty and stained cookie jar earlier, the one shaped like a teddy bear that hid cookies that tasted funny. She wasn’t supposed to get cookies or any food by herself, but she’d just been so hungry that her tummy hurt, and Miss Becky was sick again, napping on the couch. She hadn’t meant to knock the ashtray off the counter, shattering it into tiny pieces. Some were shaped like icicles that clung to the roof during the winter. Others were no bigger than chips.

All she’d wanted was a cookie.

Her slender shoulders jerked at the sound of the all cracking on the other side of the closet. She bit down harder on her lip. A metallic taste burst into her mouth. Tomorrow there would be a hold the size of Mr. Henry’s big hand in the plaster, and Miss Becky would cry and she’d get sick again.

The soft creak of the closet door was like a crack of thunder to her ears.

Oh no, no, no…

He wasn’t supposed to find her in here. This was her safe place whenever Mr. Henry was angry or when he—

She tensed, eyes peeling wide as a body taller and broader than hers slipped inside and then knelt in front of her. In the dark, she couldn’t make out much of his features, but she knew in her belly and her chest who it was.

“I’m sorry,” she gasped.

“I know.” A hand settled on her shoulder, the weight reassuring. He was the only person she felt okay with when he touched her. “I need you to stay in here, ‘kay?”

Miss Becky had said once that he was only six months older than her six years, but he always seemed so much bigger, older than her, because in her eyes, he took up her entire world.

She nodded.

“Don’t come out,” he said, and then he pressed into her hands the redheaded doll she’d dropped in the kitchen after she broke the ashtray and rushed into the closet. Too frightened to retrieve her, she’d left Velvet where she had fallen, and she’d been so upset because the doll had been a gift from him many, many months before. She had no idea how he’d gotten Velvet, but one day he’d simply shown up with her, and she was hers, only hers.

“You stay in here. No matter what.”

Holding the doll close, clenched between her knees and chest, she nodded again.

He shifted, stiffening as an angry shout rattled the walls around them. It was her name that dripped ice down her spine; her name that was shouted so furiously.

A small whimper parted her lips and she whispered, “I just wanted a cookie.”

“It’s okay. Remember? I promised I’d keep you safe forever. Just don’t make a sound.” He squeezed her shoulder. “Just stay quiet, and when I…when I get back, I’ll read to you, ‘kay? All about the stupid rabbit.”

All she could do was nod again, because there had been times when she hadn’t stayed quiet and she’d never forgotten those consequences. But if she stayed quiet, she knew what was coming. He wouldn’t be able to read to her tonight. Tomorrow he would miss school and he wouldn’t be okay even though he would tell her he was.

He lingered for a moment and then he eased out of the closet. The bedroom door shut with a smack, and she lifted the doll, pressing her tearstained face into it. A button on Velvet’s chest poked at her cheek.

Don’t make a sound.

Mr. Henry started to yell.

Don’t make a sound.

Footsteps punched down the hall.

Don’t make a sound.

Flesh smacked. Something hit the floor, and Miss Becky must have been feeling better, because she was suddenly shouting, but in the closet the only sound that mattered was the fleshy whack that came over and over. She opened her mouth, screaming silently into the doll.

Review: Wait for You (Wait for You, #1) by J. Lynn

 

When I first saw this book, it was wildly popular and I was surprised that I’d never heard of J. Lynn. After not too much digging, I found that J. Lynn is actually Jennifer L. Armentrout, the author of the Lux series. I decided I needed to give her New Adult book a try since I've read her other series as well.

Avery changed her whole life after what happened at that Halloween party five years ago. She moved away from her hometown to a college far away. She’s trying to make friends and to live a normal college life. When she meets Cameron, the swoon-worthy boy across the hall, she can’t seem to shake him. He’s everywhere. As she starts to let Cameron in, she finally starts to believe that her life may end up being normal. That’s when she starts receiving threatening emails and phone calls. It’s clear someone doesn't want her to move on and they’ll make sure she doesn’t forget that night.

I’ve had a love hate relationship with Miss Armentrout. While I do like her stories, certain originality issues were brought to my attending and so I tend to read her books with a grain of salt.

Wait for You wasn’t my favorite of her books or my favorite romance out there. I know I’ve said it ten zillion times, but I’m getting somewhat tired of the “girl who was abused in the past is healed by the sexy boy in her pre-calc class” theme. That’s not to say that other readers don't’ enjoy them, but I’m getting bored.

Avery doesn’t stand out as a strong leading lady in my opinion and so that made it a little harder to connect with the book. I’m big into powerful, intelligent women being the leads in the books and Avery just didn’t strike me as having those characteristics. Maybe in the end she turned things around, but by that point, I was already falling off the wagon.

The plot moved along at a good pace and was slightly predictable but still enjoyable. I doubt I’ll be reading book two in the series, but maybe I’ll change my mind when it’s released.

Opal (Lux, #3) by J.L. Armentrout - Review

I said I wouldn't read another J.L.A. book... and then I did. I couldn't help it! I was nervous on a plane trip home to see my parents and I had forgotten I pre-ordered Opal on my Kindle. During a particularly turbulent point in the flight, I dove in to keep myself busy.

Now, I could say I kept reading out of principle. I had started the book so I needed to finish it, right? I would be lying.  Opal sucked me in and while it did take me a while to finish the book, I actually really enjoyed it.

Opal brings us back to the world of Katy and the Luxen. With her feelings for Daemon as strong as ever, it seems that nothing can stop the gang as the dive further into investigating the secretive and elusive government group set out to understand, destroy and surpass the Luxen. But not all is as it seems as Katy and Daemon learn the hard way that you can't trust anyone.

I don't want to give too much away for the readers who haven't started the Lux series yet as a lot happens in this 3rd installment... a lot. I have to say that I am slightly disappointed in myself for reading this book. After finding out that book 2, Onyx, was a copy off of a TV show about aliens AND after reading the first book in the Covenant series and finding myself reading a different version of The Vampire Academy, I was a little angry. I told myself I wouldn't read another one of her stories as I would be encouraging the unfair copy-cating. Something about the Lux series has drawn me in, though.

In my opinion, Onyx was not very well written, the plot didn't have me excited nor did it leave me swooning. I thought that the series would continue in this pattern and that I would be bored with book 3. That was definitely not the case. Armentrout brought her "A" game to the table in Opal and not only was the story action packed and exciting, but informative as well. We learn a lot more about the Luxen, the hybrids and the DOD.

Of course, you can look forward to many swoon worthy moments between Daemon and Katy too. Their dynamic and deepening love really made the story for me. They were done playing hard to get and messing around. Now, the pair began developing their feelings for each other and bonding on a different level. I really enjoyed their aspect of the story.

If you've read any reviews of Opal on Goodreads, you will notice that a developing trend seems to be exclamations of grief, shock, awe and all around disappointment with the cliffhanger ending that J.L.A leaves her readers. It's hard not to see that something about the ending of Opal really upset and devastated people. I obviously won't be giving away the ending, but I was understandably upset as well. It wasn't like the moments while reading Vampire Academy books where I cried alone in my room wondering why Richelle Mead felt the need to torture me so, but the cliffhanger of an ending was slightly heartbreaking and made me want book 4 to be released soon.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. With the thoughts of this being a copied storyline in the back of my head, I couldn't throw myself completely into the story but it was entertaining and I will most likely be reading book 4.

Onyx (Lux, #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout - Review

Well it took me a while, but I finally finished Onyx. I have some very mixed feelings on this book and so without further adieu, I'm going to jump right into my review!


Onyx picks up right where Obsidian left off. Not only has Katy's relationship with Daemon changed, but Katy herself has changed, and she's not sure what's happening to her. She feels sick all the time and suddenly, objects begin to move at her will. As if that wasn't enough to deal with, the DOD come into the picture and she and her friends are no longer safe. Secrets begin to unfold around them and Katy and the gang must figure out who they can trust, and who are their enemies.

This is going to be a very difficult review for me to write. First off, the pacing in Onyx was a little off for me. I had trouble reading more than 20 pages at each sitting and while the first book took only a day to read, this one took over a week for me to get through. Once I got to the end of the book, things happened so fast I felt rushed and confused. This made it hard for me to enjoy this book.

I also didn't love the change in characters in this book. I felt like the strong and sassy Katy we saw in Obsidian was gone, replaced with a timid, worrisome girl who cried all the time. I understand that characters change as do their circumstances, but Katy's character was one of my favorite parts of book 1. Daemon's change in attitude was also troubling for me. In book one, Daemon had a very strong and snarky personality with a sort of sweet sensitivity behind the outer rude boy. In this book, I kind of had trouble finding the real Daemon. It seemed like he completely changed and not for the better.

The last and possibly biggest problem I had with this book was that I read it was another copy cat. I've just recently finished Half-Blood and as a huge fan of Vampire Academy, I didn't love the extremely similar plot line and characters, but I tolerated it. I read a recent review of this book by the Book Slayer, indicating that the Lux series followed one of her favorite T.V. shows called Roswell. While I've never seen a single episode of the show, it's pretty disappointing that once again, one of  Armentrout's novels is a play on another show or book. I was right in the middle of a super slow part of Onyx when I read Lauren's review and it just made it that much harder to finish.

The ending was interesting and more intense than the rest of the book, but my enjoyment was tainted with the knowledge that this was just another copied story. I understand taking creative liberties on existing stories, but this seems more like an unoriginal author taking another story and using it as their own. I'm a little disappointed. I've been dishing out a lot of 5's and 6's lately so hopefully I read something the blows my mind soon! I hate being in this slump!
