Mini Reviews: The Rocker That Holds Me, Trick, Real, and Damaged

 

 

I’ve been reading a ton of quick little eBook only New Adult romances that won’t really take up a whole day’s worth of a review. So I figured I’d bundle a few of them together, let you know what they’re about and what I thought and hopefully give you a taste of what’s out there in the eBook world of New Adult Romance!

The Rocker That Holds Me (The Rocker, #1) by Terri Ann Browning

 

Browning tells the story of a young rock and roll band who are gaining wide spread success. They have booze, guitars and all the women they could want. Including Emma, the childhood girl that they rescued from a life of abuse and neglect. Now their pseudo touring assistant, Emma gives them everything they want and hides her secret love for one in the band. Everything changes when her world is turned upside down and the boys find themselves in a situation they never thought possible.

I really liked this one. I read the story in one sitting and couldn’t help but feel happy afterwards. I’m a sucker for any story about a rocker who turns soft for the woman he loves... and who doesn’t? If you’re looking for a fun, flirty read, this one is for you! (7 out of 10)

Trick by Lori Garrett

 

Meet Gunner and Harlow. They had one summer of intensely passionate romance until Gunner stomped on Harlow’s heart and left her for greener pastures. Fast forward a few years, Harlow is back and she’s not about to take no for an answer. The Gunner she fell in love with is hiding behind his bad boy facade and she will stop at nothing to get him back.

While I enjoyed Trick, it wasn’t my favorite. I felt like the story was a little tired and the pacing was off. It was another book about the bad boy in town falling for the rich Daddy’s girl. It romance was interesting and it was a pretty steamy read but overall it was a book I quickly forgot after finishing. (5 out of 10)

Real (Real, Raw & Ripped, #1) by Kathy Evans

 

Real is about a troubled and dark underground fighting champion and a put together and strong women who becomes his sort of trainer/physical therapist. Remington is a fighter with serious problems but when he meets Brooke and he can’t think of anything but her.

This is one of those romance novels that could have been a lot more if there had been some serious editing. There were cases of “insta-love” and the almost primal need Remy has for Brooke was unbelievable, if not  slightly disturbing. I finished the book only to see how things ended, but I won’t be picking up any of the other stories in the series. (3 out of 10)

 

Damaged(Damaged, #1) by H.M. Ward

 

Damaged is about totally hot teacher Peter and his student Sydney. At a chance meeting, Sydney and Peter instantly hit it off and things get hot and heavy. Then, suddenly, Peter stops and shows Sydney the door. The next day, she comes to find that Peter is the new teacher in her department... talk about tension...

I just recently did a review for Losing It and it follows a similar line. Someone you almost hook up with the night before ends up as your teacher in the morning. While Damaged wasn’t my favorite book of all time, I really liked it. It was done way better than Losing It and while the characters were a little one-dimensional, I read Damaged in one sitting and I was happy I had read it. (6 out of 10)

All of these books have rave reviews on Goodreads.com so even if I wasn’t a big fan, they are all definitely worth checking out. If you’re bored on a lazy Sunday, these are great, quick reads to relax the day away!

Review: Just for Now (Sea Breeze, #4) by Abbi Glines

 

It’s time for another Sea Breeze book review! This deliciously steamy series is hard to put down and I’m always sad when I finish one! Now I have to wait a while for book 5 and I’m itching to hear more about Jax Stone’s younger brother Jason in the 5th installment of the series!

 Preston Drake has had to grow up fast. With a drug addicted mother who cares more about her next fix than taking care of her little ones, Preston has had to step up and take care of his young siblings. When times get tough, Preston has to turn to some pretty unconventional (and illegal) means of making ends meet for his family. With a different trashy girl in his bed every night, he’s content with the life he thinks he deserves. Then there’s Amanda Hardy. The younger sister of his best friend and the good girl he needs to stay away from. He know’s he’s not good for a girl like Amanda but when she turns on the charm, he can’t seems to stay away.

 Of course, I really enjoyed this book. It’s the age old story of boy with the troubled past falls for the good little rich girl in town who happens to be a friend’s younger sister. It’s a classic story replayed over and over, but Abbi Glines did it right with this one.

Her story telling is once again showcased in Just For Now. Her characters are engaging and likeable and I fell for Preston right along with Amanda! It was interesting reading Amanda’s perspective because she’s the younger girl, forever known as the “off limits” younger sister. Her heart has always beat a little faster when Preston’s around but the looming shadow of her brother and his past have always kept things from going that one step further.

We also get to see a lot more from our other favorite Sea Breeze couples including more from the focus of book five, Jason Stone. I can’t wait to get my hand on Glines’s next installment!

Review: Losing It (Losing It, #1) by Cora Carmack

 

I had Losing It for a long while before I finally got around to reading it. The premise sounded interesting and who doesn’t love a little hot for teacher action?

 Bliss is one of the only girls she knows at college to still hold her v-card. In an act of frustration and rebelliousness, she decides to go for it and lose her virginity to a one night stand. Things are going according to plan but just when things get hot and heavy, she can’t go through with it. In an embarrassingly awkward moment, Bliss detangles herself from the sexy guy she was in bed with and runs out. As if things couldn’t get worse, she comes face to face with that tall dark and handsome stranger that very Monday... he’s one of her new professors.

 I’m not sure what it was about Losing It that didn’t hit it out of the park for me. In reading all of these New Adult books, I think I’ve become a fan of reading wildly passionate romances. Maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration, but I do like when a little “can’t live without you” is involved.

 The tone was just a little... dull, i guess you could say. I never felt that excitement for Bliss and Garrick’s romance like I do in other love stories. I wasn’t a huge fan of Bliss. She was little whiney for my taste, but I did really fall for Garrick. Who doesn’t love a sexy professor?

 The story didn’t get my heart beating faster and I felt more like I was watching a poorly executed chick-flick (a la Leap Year... anyone?) that was more boring than romantic. I know a lot of people love this one so maybe I just wasn’t in the right move. Either way, Losing It wasn’t for me.

Review: Waiting For You by Shey Stahl

I saw some pretty intensely positive reviews for Waiting For You and so I decided to give it a try. It’s a coming of age tale where a dark and dangerous boy falls in love with the seemingly perfect girl next door.

Bailey has a perfectly planned out life. She’s the top of her class, has the perfect boyfriend and a future laid out by her parents. At graduation, she’s set to deliver the generic valedictorian speech to her peers about investing in their future and following their dreams when something just clicks. Bailey realizes that she doesn’t want the cookie-cutter life her parents forced down her throat and so she does something no one expects her to do: she gets in the car with the bad boy in town, her childhood best friend, and goes on an adventure across the country to find herself.

To be honest, I wasn’t a huge fan of Waiting for You. I had a lot of problems with this story, but the main issue was the pacing. The story felt like the longest book I’ve ever read. I kept thinking to myself, “Another trip? More people to meet? Another fight?!” I checked and this isn’t even close to the longest romance I’ve read all year....it just felt like it. The plot was choppy and it made it hard for me to keep my full interest locked in on the book.

The characters were not my favorite either. Bailey and Dylan are two whiny teenager who have real problems, but choose to run away together to enter into a destructive relationship. Now this could be the mid-twenties in me talking, but I was more annoyed than enamored with the couple. Man up! Deal with your issues and your family and if you’re not going to, at least make me believe in your adventurous bad decision making tirade. The pair weren’t very likeable making it hard to cheer on their runaway train wreck.

Then there was the immature fighting. They fought, they made up, he got angry, she got angry, he thought she cheated, he got angry again. So. Much. Drama. And not in a good way. I love a story with some twists and turns but the immature bickering had me wanting to pull out my hair and punch the two of them in the face.

Overall, I thought Waiting For You drug on way too long and the two love interests were not easy to like. I’ve read a similar story called The Edge of Neverand it was done so much better. The runaway adventure was believable, the characters were touching and heart-stoppingly sweet and the overall message left you in a melted puddle of happiness on the floor. This one wasn’t for me guys.

It's always a challenge when you have a relationship built with an author, or in this case authors, and you review their books. If you don't like it, do you say that you do? How will they feel about my review?! All of these things were going through my head prior to reading ATY. I have to say that in reading this steamy NA book, all of my nerves went out the window and I couldn't wait to not only let Becca and Krista know how awesome their book is, but also to tell the world!

From the first pages, you're completely sucked in. Lily and Loren's relationship is sort of a mystery to start. Clearly Lily has some major issues. I mean, the first time we see her she's trying to sneak out of a frat house without having to embarrass herself with a walk of shame (and it's not the first time). Then Loren comes to her rescue at the door. Initially, I thought Loren would be the good guy to her bad girl. Her knight in shinning armor if you will. But that's not necessarily the case to start. Loren has his share of issues too. Both Lily and Loren deal with addicting, but two different forms. One addicted to sex, while the other the bottle. It was an interesting dynamic to their relationship and made it really hard for me to put the book down.

I wasn't real wild about the characters at first. I mean, if I met either of them on the sidewalks of my college campus, I'd know they were trouble ten feet off! Then the tension heated up and you couldn't put it down!

All in all, I absolutely loved Addicted to You. It's the perfect summer read! There is romance, angst, and it's all kinds of edgy situations. If you're looking for a hot read for the summer, you won't be able to put Addicted to You down!!

Review: While It Lasts (Sea Breeze, #3) by Abbi Glines

 

After reading Because of Low and being introduced to bad boy, Cage York, I couldn't wait to get my hands on While It Lasts!

Cage’s partying ways have finally caught up to him. After one night of having a little too much to drink and getting behind the wheel, he finds himself with a DUI and in danger of messing up his future set to get himself out of Sea Breeze. His coach sends him to work on a farm for a few weeks to teach him some responsibility. The smelly, hot, and girl-less farm life is not how Cage wants to spend his summer. When he finds out that the farmer’s daughter is drop dead gorgeous, he thinks his time on the farm could actually be fun. That is until he tries talking to her.

Eva the ice queen wants nothing to do with the delinquent working on her Daddy’s farm. After tragedy strikes and her carefully laid plans for her life are shot to hell, she’s content with a solitary life. But it’s hard to resist Cage’s charm and she finds herself strangely attracted to boy living in her Daddy’s barn.

I will tell you that I’m a little biased when it comes to farmer’s daughters stories. I grew up reading my mom’s old cowboy romance novels and I’m a sucker for boots wearing, hay bailing, honk tonk inhabiting guys. While Cage isn’t necessarily a cowboy, Eva is your typical farmer’s daughter who falls for the hired hand and let me tell you, Glines gets steamy with this one! Her books seem to get sexier and sexier and you won't find me complaining!

I loved Eva and Cage’s story. Cage has a chip on his shoulder and an axe to grind while Eva has to overcome her tragic past. Together they find love, passion and a friendship that neither one of them expected.

This is my favorite book in the Sea Breeze series and it’s definitely not one to miss!

Review: Because of Low (Sea Breeze , #2) by Abbi Glines

 

And it’s time for another Abbi Glines review. Her quick, fun and flirty reads can’t be put out fast enough for me. I think I need to have a new weekly meme called Fridays with Glines for the amount of books that I have of hers to read and review.

Marcus Hardy got his heart broken last summer when Sadie chose Jax over him. To make matters worse, he’s had to leave college and come live in Sea Breeze because of a family crisis. Living with his friend Cage seems like it will be the perfect distraction for him as he has to be there for his mom and sister. That all changes with Marcus meets Low, Cage’s best friend and the girl he introduces as his future wife. Low’s troubled past and rocky family situation make it easy for her to lean on Cage for everything. When she meets Marcus, her world is turned upside down. The couple has to battle their own inner demons, their turbulent families and of course... Cage.

I really didn’t know what to expect from the second book in the Sea Breeze series. While I liked Breathe, I found some flaws with the characters and the writing style that made the book a “like”... not a “love”.

In Because of Low, we experience a new host of characters and Glines does a much better job in building her characters, their relationships and their backstories. There was a lot more character development and her characters made better and more realistic decisions, making it easier to fall into the story.

Marcus is an easy character to love. He’s the good little rich boy on the block who you can’t help but fall for. He’s cute, charming and a total gentleman.... quite the opposite of Cage. We don’t see too much of this bad boy but what we do see is a rough around the edges playboy who thinks he’s on top of the world. After peaking, I know that book 3 follows Cage and I can’t wait to see what Glines has in store for him!

Low is a sweetheart whose background gives her a whole lot of sass. All the boys want her and all the girls hate her (except for me, I think we’d be friends... she’s my kind of BFF) and she’s not afraid to show off her rough and tumble side. I liked reading her character because there was a lot of vulnerability in her that you don’t see in many female characters in the genre.

The strongest aspect of this story is the plot. It’s well paced and Marcus and Low’s lives start out worlds apart, but end up intertwining into a web of lies and deceit. I love romance series that don’t follow the same people, but travel from couple to couple. You still get to hear about your old favorites, but you get a delicious new romantic entanglement to read about. The Sea Breeze series is setting itself up to be one of my new favorites.

This is a book for those in the mood for a quick read with a lot of heart. I read it in one sitting and had a smile on my face the whole rest of the night.

Review: Unbroken (Cedar Cove, #1) by Melody Grace

I’ve had my eye on this NA book for a long time. I love the cover and the synopsis had me excited! While I will admit, I’ve been trying to read more YA books, sometimes you need some romance novel drama in your life!

Juliet left her turbulent past behind four years ago when she left Cedar Cove for the last time. Her family’s beach house in the small sandy town had once been a place of love and laughter. Now the old house built by her grandfather brings back memories of a hurricane romance and a painful family loss. When her father decides to sell the place, Juliet leaves her picture perfect boyfriend and life in the big city to go back and pack up her memories. She hopes to never see Emerson, the local bad boy in town, but does just that. Their wild and passionate relationship picks up where it left off, but will their past heartbreaks tear them apart?

Unbroken was interesting to read. As I’ve said before, I’m often turned away from some NA romance novels because they always tend to center around violent sexual behavior and/or past sexual abuse. This is a rant I’ve had before, but I’m tired of reading romances involving young women and their abusive past relationships. That’s not to say that those things don’t happen or that they’re bad books. I’m just at a point that if I’m reading a romance novel, I want it to be happy and passionate, not depressing and gross. It’s not my thing.

For some reason, I kept feeling like I was waiting for the other shoe to drop in Unbroken. I felt like any page could open up a past filled with abuse for Juliet. It could have been the mystery behind her aversion to the beach house or her familiar relationship with a brooding bad boy, but I was just waiting for my hopes of a happily ever after romance to be shattered.

I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Unbroken turned out to be my kind of love story. I promise no spoilery other than that I got my happy ending. I enjoyed reading both Emerson and Juliet’s characters and their struggles were relatable.

Emerson is the townie that just can’t seem to get out and Juliet is the girl with a messed up family life trying to find the right path. I really liked Juliet because she had real problems and she dealt with them. With an alcoholic father and a non-existent relationship with her sister, Juliet goes from having a screwed up family life with no future ahead of her, to swinging in the complete opposite direction. Dating the preppiest boy on her campus and giving up her dreams to be a photographer to be an accountant, it seems that Juliet’s only way of coming out on top to change who she is. By the end of the story, she comes to terms with the fact that she doesn’t need to change who she is to be happy or successful and that other people’s misfortune and unhappiness won't become her own.

She was also not your typical romance leading lady. Most girls in these NA stories get worked up over their guys dating other girls when they weren’t even together or freak out for no apparent reason. Juliet has a good head on her shoulders. She’s sensible and realistic and it was refreshing.

The story was well written and the pacing was great. Sometimes stories with flashbacks can become confusing, jumbled and annoying, but Grace does a great job in navigating Juliet and Emerson’s past with their future.

Overall, I read this in one sitting and I really enjoyed it once I got past my fear of having the story turn out to be a Fifty Shades of Grey copycat.

Review: Tidal by Emily Snow

And it’s time for another New Adult book and this one promises the lures of the Hollywood lifestyle, rehab, Hawaii and a sexy Australian surfer boy.

Willow Avery has become Hollywood’s “It” girl that fell from good graces. After a second stint in rehab, Willow wants out of the treatment center and to stay clean this time. She needs some time to relax and adjust to being out of rehab, but her parents have other plans. Straight out of the hospital, Willow is signed up to do a remake of an old surf movie from the past and is whisked away to film in Hawaii. The Hawaiian breeze might be good for her, but she knows that her gorgeous surf instructor, Cooper, needs to play no role in her recovery. Of course, fate steps in and Cooper may just be the one to save her.

When I started reading Tidal, I hated Willow. She was selfish, annoying and had an attitude to match. I think a lot of that had to do with the fact that she wasn’t really a big fan of herself right out of rehab. She was whiny, rude and constantly wondering when and if she was going to relapse. I actually started reading this one awhile back and I disliked Willow so much that I stopped reading it for a while.

I ended up really enjoying Tidal after giving it a second chance. I liked the twists and turns we were sent through and I especially liked Cooper, the surf instructor. He is cute, fun and of course has that surfer-boy-who-is-wise-beyond-his-years vibe that ends up being just what Willow needs.

Sexy Aussies aside, I think the best part of this book is seeing the transformation that Willow goes through. She comes out of rehab hating life and hating herself and the book ends with her starting a new beginning. It was a coming of age tale of the scandalous Hollywood variety.

Tidal is a quck and easy read for those who are fans of the New Adult genre. It's not the most original and it's not the steamiest, but if you have an afternoon where you just want to kick back and read something fun, this Hawaiian romance may be just what you need!

I've always been a self professed cover judger and that's how I decide what I read. I'm not saying it's a fair assessment, but it's how I am. I'm completely head over heels for this cover. Hafsah over at Icey Designs did such a fantastic job and I would have picked this book because of the cover alone! I may be a little biased because my blogger friends wrote the book and the amazing Hafsah did my blog design, but we won't bring that up. What do you guys think?

Walking Disaster (Beautiful, #2) by Jaime McGuire - ARC Review

I was pretty excited when I got approved for this ARC to review. I really enjoyed reading Beautiful Disaster when it came out and as a Travis Maddox lover, I couldn’t wait to get inside of his sexy, tattooed brain.


Walking Disaster follows the same exact plot line as Beautiful Disaster, but this time, it’s told from Travis’s point of view. We see most of the same scenes that were in the first book, but also some additional ones where we see Travis getting into trouble on his own and get to dig a little deeper into his mind.

It’s hard to explain how I felt reading this book but I think this is the best way to tell you: I love re-reading books. It’s one of my favorite things to do. On those days where I’m sick or upset or flying in an airplane (I’m a nervous flyer) Harry Potter, Twilight and the Mortal Instruments comfort me. I relive those stories that I've read a million times but still love because they’re books that have a special place in my heart. These books are also very well written and so they have a high quality re-read value.

 BeautifulDisaster was a romance book that I did really enjoy, but not one I’d re-read very often. That being said, reading the same story from Travis’s point of view was a little anticlimactic. I liked the same parts that liked in BeautifulDisaster, and got bored at the same points. Don't’ get me wrong, I enjoyed my time reading, but it didn’t blow my socks off. Now if you gave me a Harry Potter book told from Hermione’s point of view or if Stephanie Meyer ever releases Midnight Sun, telling Twilight from Edward’s point of view, I’d enjoy it a lot more than I did Walking Disaster. Those high quality books and characters that have such big personalities, I’d love to get inside their heads.

A really cool feature of the story is that we get an glimpse into the married life of Travis and Pigeon. Readers get to travel to the future and see where our lovely characters end up, and that made the story really come to a close nicely.

 I'm not really sure what I was expecting from Walking Disaster, but I had at least hoped that there would be more pizzazz to the story that what I was given. If you were a fan of Beautiful Disaster, definitely give this a try. You may be unlike me and fall in love with the series all over again , but I was just slightly unexpectedly bored.

I read The Perfect Game on a whim. It was a football Sunday and I didn’t want to sit and pretend that I was interested in what was going on, so I boycotted and bought myself a book. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I really enjoyed The Perfect Game!

Cassie’s a Junior in College and she knows to stay away from bad boy and baseball stud Jack Carter. With girls all over him twenty four seven, she knows he’s bad news and she’s never even spoken to him. Jack begins to take an interest in Cassie when his little brother starts hanging out with Cassie’s best friend. After pursuing her, she finally concedes and goes out on a date with him. It’s then that Cassie see’s through the tough and promiscuous Jack into the troubled and vulnerable guy who just wants to be a baseball star. From there, their lives change as they fall in love and both begin to follow their dreams. But living out their dreams may be harder than they had imagined with having to live apart and a plot that may ruin them forever.

A lot happens in The Perfect Game. The books begins by spanning a few weeks at college, then moves to cover a few months while Jack is away playing in the minor leagues and finally a few more months as Cassie moves to New York to become a photographer. We have a lot of time to see both characters grow up and their relationship mature as well.

I liked the twist that happens in the story. It was very different from your typical romance. Normally, one person thinks someone is unfaithful and so they argue about trust and that’s the big problem in the relationship. Sterling takes it a step further and creates a real life situation where no one wins. I loved seeing how the characters worked through their inner demons to deal with the painful and heartbreaking possibility that they’ve ruined a chance at happiness in the future.

I read this book in one sitting and I felt happy and content at the end. It may have something to do with how heart stoppingly adorable Jack ends up being, but I think it was the book as a whole. It focused on a real relationship that really had it’s problems. Both Cassie and Jack have to work through their commitment and trust issues but they find themselves happy in the end.

The Perfect Game is a great feel good NA romance if you’re looking for a quick read!
