     We come up on two creatures with big circle eyes like Morgan’s, and it’s the first time I feel a chill. What happens next would have taken my breath away, if I were actually breathing.

     Morgan, drawing me in against his shoulder blades, opens his mouth to let loose a high-pitched whine that blurs my vision and makes me feel like my brain’s trying to climb out of my face. The scream wraps around me until I feel I might snap, and when it’s over the pressure of the deep swallows it whole. Trembling, I look over his shoulder at the two creatures. 

     Their mouths are open, also, and though Morgan has shifted us so I’m directly behind him, it’s clear they’re hissing right at me, from black holes that have no teeth and no tongue, and that are surrounded by vibrating skin folds. And then, just like that, they leave, pulling us forward in their slipstream. We watch until they reach the far end of the stadium and slither to the top pew, never making eye contact with one another. 

     But then I look around, wondering if everyone around me is making some sort of contact with each other, just not in any way that’s familiar to me, because they’re all staring in the same general direction. Morgan squeezes my hand before pulling me a bit further, but it’s far less reassuring than I would’ve liked. When we’re close to the other side of the arena he stops, gesturing for me to turn around and look behind me, to where everyone else is facing. 

     I don’t know how I missed it. A huge, breathtaking, golden, glowing tube coral is embedded in the sand in the center of the arena, its many, many arms swaying independently of one another. Tethered to them are dozens of mer-bodies in all different stages of decomposition. 

     Most are bloated, half-deteriorated—some mere skeletons with gaping eyeholes pointed upward into the faraway black. The water handles their bones in a succession of jerks, each vertebra catching the current a second before the next. Long, wispy hair dances in the water above them, seemingly frozen until the final vertebra snaps. 

     The chill inside of me is growing, and I start to wonder if maybe this experience is more real than I think it is. I look up, shivering, at the endless stretch of dark water beyond the globes.

His hand slides to my back and he leans me toward the table, forcing me to catch myself on my elbows. He holds me there, his body cradling mine, his lips a breath from a touch. “I won’t let you fall.”

“I know,” I say, and I do now. Beyond time and reason, I trust this man.

His mouth brushes mine and then trails down my jaw, slowly teasing a path to my ear, where he whispers, “I’m not going to claim to own you the way he did.” He flattens his hands on my belly, possessiveness in the touch. “I’m just going to make you wish I did.”

My lips part with the erotic promise, and he is already kissing me, licking into my mouth, his tongue a sultry, seductive promise that he can make good on his vow. And while I do not wish anyone to own me again, I want what he offers in a way that defies reason.

He nips my lips and licks away the sweet ache, and somehow I feel that lick between my thighs where I am already wet and aching. His whiskers rasp my belly, his lips pressing to the center, his tongue flickering into my navel, and I tremble with the silent promise it will soon be where I want it to be. His hand flattens over my sex, inches lower until he is flicking my clit, back and forth, back and forth.

He lifts my legs to his shoulders, spreading me wide, and I am vulnerably his, and aroused beyond belief. Note from the author about Rebirth, the Altered Fate series, and the continuation of the Awakened Fate series...

Since the release of Become: Book Five of the Awakened Fate series, I've been discussing off-and-on the topic of the Altered Fate series, which was to be a spinoff story that took place after the events of Become. In working on it, however, it became apparent that the plot was too closely linked to the rest of the Awakened Fate series for the story to be truly considered a spinoff.
I consulted my beta-readers and my assistant and they all agreed. The stories need to be part of the same series. The stories are the same series.
So that's why the books of the Altered Fate series have instead become the next books of the Awakened Fate series. I hope you enjoy them!

     A shape moved in the shadows at the corner of my eye.
     My breath caught and my gaze snapped toward the motion. Large, scraggly bushes met my eyes, the green shapes almost black in the darkness. The wind shifted the branches, and my brow drew down at the sight. I’d seen something else, though. At least, I thought I had.
     Something slammed into me, driving me backward off of the rock. Branches snapped on the bush behind me as I fell into it, but the weight shoving at me didn’t leave.
     A hand clamped over my mouth. A figure held me down—big and heavy and almost certainly male, although his face was lost in the shadows and his body was a black shape in the night. An armband wrapped his muscular bicep, the black fabric stitched with glistening blue threads that picked out the shape of a mountain. Brambles stabbed into my back when he pressed me down. I shouted behind his hand, struggling to break free.
     But he was strong. So strong. His other arm rose as if to hit me. I gasped, instinctively drawing on the magic stored in my ring, cursing how it was always so slow.
     Long blades like translucent knives grew from the back of his forearm.
     My eyes went wide. A dehaian. One of those spiky-armed mermaid creatures that never, ever bothered us because they didn’t even know we existed.
      He swung the blades at me. My magic couldn’t respond fast enough.

My entire body ached the moment I tried to move, so I stopped trying. I groaned and peeled an eye open, trying to understand why this morning felt so different from all the others.

When I saw the matching sets of green eyeballs peering over the ladder, one glaring and one questioning, I wanted to scream, but the air in my throat went the other direction. I gasped and propelled myself backward into the furthest corner of the alcove.

“Do you think she’s homeless?” asked Eyeballs Number One.

Eyeballs Number Two shook his head as he scanned my body. “Maybe she ran away from home.”

“Yeah, or maybe she’s a troll that lives in the woods. Are we supposed to feed her?”

“I didn’t bring any food. Did you?”

One of the boys threw his eyes around the room, as if afraid to look away from me for long. 

“No. We should tell dad we need a fridge.”

“And how will we keep it cold, moron?”

“Hey! I’m not a moron!”

While the boys fought, I managed to creep forward until I gripped the edge of the bed with every intention to slip down undetected. 

But Eyeballs Number One saw me and placed an arm out across the other boy’s body. “Shh. She’s moving.”

My grogginess cleared, replaced by a rush of adrenaline as I stared back at the twin boys—the boys whose treehouse I’d snuck into the night before. At this realization, I straightened with a jolt. “I-I have to get home.” Panic seized my chest knowing my parents would be frantic looking for me.

Eyeballs Number Two nudged the other. “She has a home, bro.”

I bit my lip to hide my smile, happy they no longer considered me a possible troll. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to—” I didn’t know why I was about to lie, so I stopped myself. I totally meant to fall asleep there. I just didn’t mean to get caught.

“Wait!” one of them called as I headed for the ladder. I turned to see the curious one staring back at me with a sincere expression. “Are you okay?”

All I could do was nod. How could I tell two boys I didn’t know the reason for invading their sanctuary—that I had been watching them for weeks, envious of their home in the woods? Instead of saying another word, I found the ladder and moved down it, missing the last few steps in my haste. The moment I hit the ground, I accepted the impact with a grimace and took off at a sprint through the woods and toward my bedroom window. I climbed inside just as I heard my mom calling me for breakfast.
