Review: Of Triton (Of Poseidon, #2) by Anna Banks

 

 

I went into Of Triton, not really knowing what to expect. I liked Of Poseidon. It was funny, and light and a great summer read. When I met Anna Banks last year, she was a hoot and a half and I seriously could picture us being best friends. She’s witty, hilarious and you just can’t wait to see what she says next. Book 2 in the Of Poseidon series was enjoyable for the summer but I’m not sure if I’m head over heels.

 Of Triton picks up where we left off in book one. A shocking revelation was dropped on us in the last few pages of OfPoseidon and we of course want to know how things will play out for Emma and the Syrena. We see lost love reunited, betrayal and tyranny in the world of merfolk as Emma is thrown further into the world that she’s not sure she belongs in.

 While I don’t know if this is my favorite book in the world, I did enjoy it. The first half of the book started off really slow and I have to say that I had a hard time sticking with it. Once I got through to the middle I couldn’t put it down.

 I really love Emma as a character. She’s smart, headstrong and she cares very deeply for her friends and family. She has to come to grips with said shocking revelation we learn about at the end of Of Poseidon (I’m not spoiling it people!) and she does so in a mature fashion.

 I wish we had seen more of the funny quips from Emma and the gang. Book one was riddled with the hilariously snarky comments that Of Triton was somewhat lacking. I think that’s why the first half was a little harder for me to get into.

 The romance in this one was missing for me as well. I mean, Of Poseidon wasn’t any kind of tragic romance, but I was hoping for a little more Emma and Galen time in book two than what I was given. I was a little disappointed.

 Of course, the writing was well done and the pacing was pretty great, but I was unsure how the end of the book left us. There really wasn’t a huge cliffhanger and Banks kind of wrapped things up for us pretty nicely. I had to go online to check and see if there would be a book three. Apparently there is, it’s called Of Neptune and will be released sometime next year. I would have liked more of a cliffhanger or a clear cut ending, but I did enjoy the unexpected teach jerk moments at the end.

 Overall, Of Triton is a pretty fun summer read. I tend to bring the smuttiest of romance novels to the pool and beach, but if you’re more of a YA beach reader, definitely bring Of Triton.
